This series of postcards designed for the Academy of American Poets feature excerpts from poems written by the upcoming year's twelve Poem-a-Day Guest Editors at Poets.org. The set is gifted to donors as part of AAP's end of year appeal and has a print run of ~3k. This initial set was conceived by then Executive Director Ricardo Maldonado as an alternative to the previous donation gift of a branded calendar. It would prove a success and carry on over the next couple of years.
Since this was a bit of a departure / experiment for the Academy and with time being of essence, I was given under a week to come up with the designs –an exhilarating few days that ended up rekindling my passion for poetry and pushing me to work from instinct (and more abstractly). Of special significance to me is the last poem excerpt, by poet and fellow Puerto Rican, Victor Hernández Cruz, which reminded me of my late grandmother's mango paintings that still adorn our house in San Juan.
